ICS Member Interview...
The series of interviews with ICS members continues with Valerie Andersson. Valerie is one of the founding members of ICS, and the guardian of our email service.

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Skåne ? I was born and brought up in Sheffield, England and have lived in Skåne for the past 13 years plus a two year stint here in the early seventies. In between I've lived in Denmark, Hong Kong and Greece.
What do you like most about living here? The space, nature and traffic as well as the ease of getting round a city and enjoying it. The relative "accountability" of how life funtions. (My husband adds... "me".)
What three things or places to visit would you advise someone who has just arrived to do ? Wander round the centre of Malmö and get to know it, take a trip out to Ystad and Österlen for a change of countryside and lifestyle and visit "Lyons Loppis" (second hand barn, open alternate Saturday mornings at Räng Sand) for some great bargains.
Has Malmo changed in recent years ? ( I had heard that in the 1970s you had to catch the bus to Lund to find some night life???haha!) Enormously!! So much more to experience these days and lots more street life.
What is your favourite food, and can you find it in the area? I love Chinese and Vietnamese food and it's not so easy to find here. There's otherwise lots of good food here now, thankfully!!

Bits & Bobs !

10th February ICS Events Update

Brrrrrrrrrrrrr... cold this week (and last week I hear you say).Beautiful blue skies and longer days mean that this winter is in retreat at last. Last week, 2nd February was "Candlemass Day" or "Groundhog Day" if you are from the US. When you are half way between winter and the start of spring. People believed that the weather on Candlemass Day predicted how the rest of the winter would go. Cold & bright means more winter to come while storms, wind and rain mean that Spring is on its way.  Or as an old German proverb puts it.. " The badger comes out of his lair on Candlemass Day, and if he finds snow, walks abroad. But if he sees the sun shining he goes back into his hole...."

Finally....  "Interview with a member..."
The First of a series of interviews with an ICS member. This time we asked Rushina Ansari a few questions, and she was kind enough to answer them. If you would like to give your own answers to these questions mail us as before....

How long have you lived here and where did you live before?
Our 5yrs in Sweden seem to have just flown. My daughter was born in Singapore and we came to Santa-land when she was 2 yr. old. The journey from Singapore to Sweden has been stimulating. The cultures have been a complete contrast and so have been the weather and the landscape. Life is about experiences and these diversities of nature and humanity are uplifting for our souls. We like to bloom with these contrasts rather than wither away.
What is your favourite thing to do / experience here? Education system in Sweden has been very encouraging. The variety of courses and the ease of applications were very tempting to my ongoing learning nature. I have undertaken an eclectic mix of courses at the Malmo University and now I am about to finish my master in Interaction Design, which is like a dream.
What one thing would you change here, if you could? I would love to clear the clouds away, from the skies above Malmo city and from the minds of the residents to unravel a bright and shiny smile .
